The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office and the Evansville Police Department arrested an Evansville man on May 2 following a violent domestic disturbance at a residence on the 1500 block of W. Missouri Avenue.
Authorities said Christopher Andrew is accused of physically assaulting several people, including an 11-year-old child, and biting a sheriff’s deputy during his arrest. The incident began when the Evansville Police Department responded to a report from the juvenile victim that Andrew had assaulted her and another male at the home.
A Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office deputy located Andrew, who had fled on foot, in a nearby alley. During apprehension, officials said Andrew violently resisted by striking the deputy multiple times and biting him on the forearm for several seconds. He also took the deputy’s portable radio before throwing it back at him. With assistance from an arriving police officer, Andrew was subdued and taken into custody. The deputy suffered scratches and a deep bite wound.
At the original scene, officers found evidence that Andrew struck both an adult male—causing a bloody nose—and the juvenile in front of two other children. Prior to police arrival, officials said he attacked another adult male outside by striking him from behind without warning; this victim briefly lost consciousness but was evaluated by ambulance personnel.
Andrew was medically cleared at Deaconess Midtown Hospital before being transported to Vanderburgh County Jail by police. Charges include battery against a public safety official as a Level 5 felony; resisting law enforcement causing bodily injury as a Level 5 felony; battery against a child under fourteen as a Level 6 felony; domestic battery in presence of children under sixteen as Level 6 felony; and battery causing serious bodily injury as Level 5 felony.
Sheriff Noah Robinson said: “Our deputy is going to be OK and I am grateful the other victims of these senseless attacks are as well. I want to express my sincere appreciation to the Evansville Police Department for their rapid response and professionalism. This Office will stand fully behind Prosecutor Diana Moers as justice is pursued in this case.”
Officials reminded that all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
