Mighty Oaks Women's Soccer Wins First RSC Match
In the first conference game of the season, the Mighty Oaks came away with a 3-1 win against St. Mary of the Woods College on Thursday, September 22.
The Mighty Oaks dominated possession throughout the first half, creating chances throughout. They finally found a breakthrough in the 33rd minute when Lauren Zirkelbach scored.
From Kassidy Elkin's punt, Zirkelbach won the ball at the halfway line, laid the ball off to Madison Nicolas who then slotted a diagonal ball to Claudia Melgar. Melgar then crossed the ball at the edge of the 18 to Kennedy Hospelhorn who took a shot that was saved and bounced kindly to Zirkelbach who tapped it in for the first goal of the match.
For the second goal, Nicolas on the left wing dribbled the ball in the box and produced a cross that went out wide to Maddy Myers who attempted to cross it, but was blocked and the ball landed at Rachael Poneskis's feet. It took three attempts to shoot and the final shot was on target which took a massive deflection from a St. Mary's player into the top left corner. Her goal made it 2-0 at halftime to the Mighty Oaks.
Shortly after the halftime whistle, St. Mary's won the ball and kicked it long to their striker where a defensive error allowed her to run through on goal, forcing Elkin into a diving save. The striker followed the rebound to tap it in and make it 2-1.
Myers helped build the attack from the back and played a lofted pass to Hospelhorn down the wing who played it inwards to Melgar who first touch crossed it into Poneskis. She produced a lofted header into the top right corner of the goal, lobbing the keeper as well to make it 3-1.
The Mighty Oaks continued to attack throughout the second half and kept the lead for the remainder of the game as the final score ended 3-1. The Mighty Oaks had twelve shots with seven on goal. Elkin finished the game with four saves.
Coming off back to back wins, the Mighty Oaks will look to finish their three-game week off strong when they play at home on Saturday October 1st against Ohio Christian University. GO MIGHTY OAKS!!
