Lady Oaks Take Home Clutch Victory from Midway

Lady Oaks Take Home Clutch Victory from Midway

To open up their River States Conference season, the Lady Oaks basketball team traveled to Midway University in Kentucky to take on the Eagles. In a very close game, Oakland City came home with a victory due to a very strong end of the game.

In the first period, the Lady Oaks came out hot, taking an early lead due to a three-point bucket from Taylor Dillard. The Midway Eagles were able to fight back, but due to a strong finish in the first quarter, Oakland City went into the second period leading 21-19. Two layups by Emilee Hope gave the Mighty Oaks the lead.

Midway University took the lead right away in the second period and did not give it away. The Lady Oaks kept it close, but were down 32-38 by halftime. With their work cut out for them, Oakland City went into the second half with a lot of motivation.

Even though the Lady Oaks were able to score fourteen points, Midway also kept finding buckets and held onto a strong lead. By the end of the third quarter, the score was 45-54, still in favor of Midway University.

The Mighty Oaks did not give up. An eight-point deficit was turned into a one-point lead when Davinique Campbell was able to make a layup and moved the score to 57-56. With more than six minutes left in the game, it was now up to Oakland City to build on the lead, or at least maintain it.

The lead kept growing and the Lady Oaks got on a hot streak. Ellen Meeringa was able to shoot for three before Jalaya Dowell made good use of two free throws. Midway got close to tying up the game several times, but every time the Eagles got close, Oakland City was able to reassure their lead.

By the end of the game, Oakland City was able to hold onto their lead. The final score was 70-67 in Midway. With that the Oakland City Mighty Oaks improved their River States Conference record to 1-0.

Emilee Hope led the team in points, with twenty. Taylor Dillard had sixteen points. From the free throw line, Oakland City was successful 18 out 17 times. Ellen Meeringa played big role in that, scoring eight out of eight attempts.

Next up for the Lady Oaks is their first conference game at home. At 1:00 PM on Saturday November 19, they will take the floor in the Johnson Center versus Indiana University Southeast. The Grenadiers of IUS are also 1-0 in the River States Conference after they beat Brescia University today.
