Mighty Oaks Fall Short to Midway in First RSC Matchup
The men's basketball team traveled to Midway University to open up their River States Conference season. Unfortunately, the Mighty Oaks went home with an 0-1 record in conference play.
Oakland City was able to create a lead early on in the first half. Four minutes into the game, the Mighty Oaks were up 10-6. The Midway Eagles were able to take command of the lead and did not let go. While Oakland City had trouble finding the basket, Midway kept building on their lead. By the end of the first half, the Midway Eagles were up 31-24.
The Mighty Oaks had a lot of trouble making field goals. Only 36.8 percent of the attempts went in. Even though Midway didn't have a much higher field goal percentage, they were able to create more chances. This helped them hold on to their lead.
In the second half the Mighty Oaks were able to score 31 points, however Midway scored 33 to help them win the game. The final score in Kentucky was 64-55. With this loss, Oakland City's overall record is now 3-1 and their River States Conference record is 0-1.
For Oakland City, Drake Moore led the team in points with twelve, Jake Cochran had nine. Abdul Wurie, who came off the bench, was able to score eight and block three shots, leading the team in the latter category.
On Saturday, November 19, the Mighty Oaks will have a chance to redeem themselves in another River States Conference matchup. Indiana University Southeast will travel to Oakland City to take the court in the Johnson Center at 3:00 PM. Just like Oakland City, the Grenadiers of IUS are also 0-1 after taking a loss to Brescia University tonight.
