Woeful Second Half Shooting Dooms Oaks Against ALC Eagles
The Oakland City University men's basketball team (7-8, 1-4 RSC) looked to return to the win column before their three game road stretch, hosting the Eagles of Alice Lloyd College (7-7, 2-3). After falling behind 34-31 at the half, OCU was unable to find any sort of offensive consistency, making just five field goals in the final 20 minutes of play, losing by the final score of 73-49.
Allen Sims was the only OCU player to reach double digits in scoring, posting 11 points on 4-16 shooting, while joining Tyquez Priester as the team's leading rebounders with seven each. DJ Redding (4-7) and Drake Moore (3-12) each posted eight points, while Priester authored seven counters. Moore also handed out a game high five assists in the loss.
Ben Soumahoro led the way for ALC, scoring a game high 18 points, on 7-13 shooting, while going 4-9 from the foul line. Will Philpot added a dozen counters while grabbing a game high 15 rebounds. Bryce Slone and Brady Nelson each added seven points to the Alice Lloyd side of the book.
For the game, OCU made 18-63 (28.6%) of the shot attempts, including just 5-31 (16.1%) in the second half. Alice Lloyd scored on 27-66 (40.9%) of their field goal tries, making 2-10 (20.0%) from three point range. The Oaks made 4-16 (25.0%) from long range while scoring on 9-13 (69.2%) from the foul line, compared to 17-31 (54.8%) for the Eagles.
As a team, the Oaks were outrebounded 56-36, including a 19-9 deficit on the offensive glass. Each team handed out eight assists, while the Oaks picked up seven steals in the contest, one more than the Eagles. OCU committed 13 turnovers, one fewer than ALC, while also leading in blocked shots 5-4.
Next up for the Oaks will be a road contest at West Virginia Tech, tipping off in the second half of the RSC double-header, which begins with the women's game at noon central time. Following the WVUT game, OCU will travel to Pittsburgh to take on Point Park University on January 12, scheduled to tip off at 6:30, followed by a matchup with Carlow University on January 14, with a 2:00 pm start time.
