The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office and the Evansville Police Department announced on April 17 the official launch of their new Joint River Patrol Unit, restoring a law enforcement presence on the Ohio River for the first time in over 25 years.

The new initiative aims to enhance public safety along approximately 36 miles of shoreline within Vanderburgh County, including coverage of the Port of Evansville. The unit will also provide assistance to neighboring jurisdictions as needed.

The patrol vessel, named Riverwolf, was partially funded through grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and U.S. Coast Guard Port Security partners. Additional support for overtime costs comes from an Indiana Department of Natural Resources grant. The vessel’s name honors Charlie Wolfinger, a former Special Deputy who was well known on the river during the 1980s and early 1990s.

Rob Henson played a significant role in reviving this program by suggesting its return and helping secure funding through grant writing efforts. The Joint River Patrol Unit will be staffed by about eighteen personnel—nine from each agency—including a supervising Sergeant and part-time Special Deputy from the Sheriff’s Office.

Personnel have completed training with Indiana Conservation Officers as well as joint water operations with Louisville Metro Police, Jeffersonville Police Department, Perry Township Fire Department, and Marrs Township Fire Department. In May 2026, Vanderburgh County is set to host the NASBLA Tactical Boat Operator Course to further strengthen operational readiness.

The agencies say their mission follows a proactive approach: “presence is prevention.” They intend for increased visibility on local waterways to deter crime and improve boater safety throughout Memorial Day to Labor Day weekends, holidays, special events, or when law enforcement operations require it.

Mayor Stephanie Terry participated in christening Riverwolf using a bottle of Ski soda—a gesture that added local flavor to the ceremony—while several community leaders attended in support.
